One Week Itinerary for Sanibel Island 2025: A Guide for Fun, Relaxation and Dining

Welcome to Sanibel Island, a tropical paradise where pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, and laid-back charm create the perfect vacation escape. Sanibel did face challenges in 2024 when two hurricanes caused flooding and damage to the area. Recovery efforts are ongoing, and the island is improving daily. Most shops and restaurants are already open or set to reopen soon! 

Day 1: Arrival & Beach Day

  • Arrive on Sanibel Island and check in to your vacation rental.
  • Late breakfast/ early lunch: Have breakfast or lunch at the Over Easy Cafe. Enjoy fluffy pancakes, breakfast wraps, and coffee in a cozy atmosphere. They close everyday at 2 pm. The location of the cafe will be moved in May/June 2025 to a different spot on Sanibel, until then you can find them at their current location!
  • Afternoon: Stroll along the shore, relax and watch the sunset on one of  Sanibel’s most popular beaches Bowman’s Beach, a tranquil spot perfect for shelling and unwinding.
  • Dinner:  Enjoy your dinner at Traders Gulf Coast Grill & Gifts: Indulge in dishes like shrimp and grits or seafood risotto, then browse the unique boutique.

Day 2: Biking & Wildlife Adventure

  • Morning: Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at Jerry’s Cafe, which is nestled in the grocery store Jerry’s Foods. Grab a coffee-to-go from the Coffee Bar in Jerry’s Foods which is affiliated with Starbucks.
  • Mid-Morning: Afterward, head to a local bike rental shop like Billy’s Rentals or Finnimore’s Bike and Beach Rentals to pick up a comfortable cruiser, complete with a basket for your essentials.
    • Your biking adventure begins on the Sanibel Shared Use Path, a well-maintained, multi-use trail that runs the length of the island. For more information, visit the City of Sanibel website.
    • Head to J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Lock up your bike at the visitor center, where you can learn about the refuge’s history and wildlife. Then, hop back on your bike to ride the 4-mile Wildlife Drive (closed Fridays to vehicles, making it extra peaceful for cyclists).
  • Lunch: Once you’re done biking through Ding Darling, you’ll probably be ready for a hearty lunch. Stop at Rosalita’s Cantina Sanibel for a casual midday break, and enjoy flavorful Mexican-inspired dishes before continuing your island adventures.
  • Afternoon: Continue the bike path along the beach and stop at popular spots like Gulfside City Park & Lighthouse Beach Park where you will find bicycle parking racks.
  • Dinner: Eat at Cheeburger Cheeburger which is a retro-style diner perfect for a fun and casual dinner. Build your own burger from a wide array of toppings, pair it with crispy fries or onion rings, and finish with a creamy, hand-spun milkshake.

Day 3: Island Hopping

  • Morning: Load up on sandwiches, drinks and snacks at Jerry’s Foods to fuel up before your boat adventure.
  • Mid-morning: Rent a boat with Port Sanibel Marina or book a guided cruise tour (check out our recommendations for guided tours!) to explore nearby islands like Cabbage Key, Cayo Costa or North Captiva, known for their untouched beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • Lunch: Stop at Cabbage Key to enjoy the charming & rustic Cabbage Key Inn and Restaurant, accessible only by boat. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning waterfront views, it’s famous for its fresh seafood, especially the iconic ‚Cheeseburger in Paradise‘.
  • Afternoon: Continue exploring or snorkeling around smaller islands, searching for dolphins and manatees along the way.
  • Dinner: Return to Sanibel for dinner at Gramma Dot’s, conveniently located at the Sanibel Marina. Dock your boat and enjoy their fresh seafood, such as their famous grouper sandwich or shrimp salad.

Day 4: Exploring Sanibel’s museums

  • Morning: Have breakfast at  Sanibel Cafe: a breezy eatery that offers a familiar menu of sandwiches & salads in an open-air setting on the docks.
  • Mid-Morning: Head over to the charming Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum to learn more about the fascinating shells that can be found on the island. 
  • Lunch: Grab a delicious lunch at the Great White Grill, a festive sports-themed pizzeria serving creative pies, pasta, sandwiches and draft beer.
  • Afternoon: Take a guided tour at the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village to learn about the island’s past.
  • Dinner: Head over to Mudbugs Cajun Kitchen to enjoy Louisiana flavored food. They offer an outdoor bar and live-music daily starting at 5 pm.

Day 5: Captiva Island Excursion

  • Morning: To start your day on your Captiva Island excursion, have breakfast at RC Otter’s Island Eats on Captiva Island, where you can enjoy your meal in a laid-back and friendly atmosphere. Their breakfast burritos and omelets are a crowd favorite. They also offer live-music daily.
  • Mid-Morning: Take a guided cruise tour (check out our recommendations for guided tours on Captiva Island) or rent paddleboards, jet skis or more with YOLO Watersports to explore Captiva’s waters.
  • Lunch: Stay for lunch at Cantina Captiva, which offers Mexican and Southwestern cuisine for a casual lunch option.

  • Dinner: End the day with dinner at The Green Flash, offering waterfront views and a menu filled with freshly caught seafood.

Day 6: Shelling & Shopping

  • Morning: Consider having breakfast at the Sanibel Sprout offering elevated vegan fare & a juice bar, plus delicious coffee.
  • Mid-Morning: Head out early to your favorite beach for shelling since the early tide brings in more lucky finds.
  • Lunch: Enjoy a laid-back lunch at Sanibel Grill, a relaxed outdoor eating & sports bar offering meals, snacks, & cocktails.
  • Afternoon: Explore Sanibel’s wide array of stores for shopping and souvenirs. Jerry’s Shopping Center, Periwinkle Place and Tahitian Gardens are great shopping options with an abundance of stores.
  • Dinner: Wrap up your day at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille with their famous Yucatan Shrimp paired with refreshing tropical cocktails in a relaxed, island-style setting.

Day 7: Farewell Day

  • Morning: Start your day at Lighthouse Cafe, a cozy spot known for specialty pancakes that also offers inventive sandwiches & other deli-style eats.
  • Mid-Morning: Take a final stroll along Lighthouse Beach, collecting shells and soaking in the morning light.
  • Lunch: Enjoy a light lunch at Island Pizza, perfect for a quick, satisfying bite. Or if you already have to had off the island, have stop at Bimini Bait Shack which is just off the island, soaking in the lively island atmosphere one last time.
