Taxi Services and Ride-Sharing
If you prefer not to drive, taxis and ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft are widely available at RSW. Taxi fares to Sanibel Island can range from $50 to $70, while ride-sharing costs can vary based on demand and location. The taxi or ride-share journey will take about 30 to 40 minutes, similar to driving yourself.
Tolls and Travel Time
Once you’re on your way to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, it is essential to factor in tolls and the total travel time. If you are coming from RSW, you will need to cross the Sanibel Causeway, which charges a toll of $6 for a standard vehicle. This toll is a one-time fee per vehicle, allowing you to access Sanibel Island

Driving to the Islands
We would say that the majority of visitors to the islands come from out of state and chose to drive from their own state, using either their own vehicles or renting a car from their hometown. This tends to be a popular option amongst those who are on the East Coast of the United States, traveling as a family or group, or plan to bring a car load of things they otherwise could not bring if they chose to fly.Â
Drive Time and Route
Whether you are coming from more Northern states like Michigan or New Jersey and passing over the Florida border from Georgia, or coming from the West from states like Texas and crossing over the border from Alabama, most routes will lead to Interstate 75, running from the North of Florida and taking you all the way to Fort Myers.
After crossing into Florida from Georgia the journey to reach Sanibel will take you approximately 5 1/2 hours.
After crossing into Florida from Alabama the journey to reach Sanibel will take you between 8 to 9 hours approximately.
The driving conditions once you enter Florida heading South are very pleasant. The highways are well maintained. Expect to run into traffic is passing through larger cities like Gainesville or Tampa at busy times of the day.
Tolls through Florida
It is possible to avoid tolls almost entirely as you drive through Florida to reach Sanibel or Captiva. If you stay on Interstate 75 after you cross in Georgia, you will avoid paying any tolls. If you are crossing into Florida from Alabama, stay on I-10 until you hit I-75 and you will pay no tolls on your way to Fort Myers.Â
Note : You will have to pay a $6.00 toll to cross over the Sanibel causeway connecting Fort Myers to Sanibel. Every vehicle is subject to this toll. You do not pay at the toll gate. It will be sent to the address registered with your license plate. You pay to go onto the island but do not have to pay to go off the island.
